Magic attacks can't be guarded, unless you use Gaurdian. You don't take nearly as much damage while guarding, and then you can usually counter attack the enemy. If you're dying a lot in battle, you could try guarding attacks more. It doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong. So if someone can break it down simply or share what their strategy was their first playthrough, that would be awesome.
